In my post about Nyamata and Ntarama, I said that 2,500 people were killed in the church at Nyamata. This is true. I neglected to mention that a total of ten thousand people were killed in this massacre: twenty-five hundred in the church, and a further seventy-five hundred in the grounds around the church.
It is hard to imagine this happening even once, but during this genocide, massacres of this proportion (and some that were significantly larger) happened frequently in the two weeks beginning on April 7, 1994. It is estimated that 50% of all of the killing happened by April 21, and then 10% of the surviving Tutsis were killed weekly until the genocide ended in July.
